What is Ransomware?

Simply stated ransomware is malicious computer programs that criminals use to lock up the files on your computer, preventing you from accessing them.

Then the criminal demands a "ransom" from you

This ransom must generally be paid via "bitcoin", a digital currency that you buy for real dollars that is extremely difficult to trace.

How You Get Infected

Your network can be infected with ransomware by clicking a link in an email, opening an attachment, downloading a file, or just visiting a website.

Here’s what the FBI says about Ransomware

fbi logo“Ransomware attacks are not only proliferating, they’re becoming more sophisticated. Businesses and other organizations have recently been infected resulting in the loss of sensitive or proprietary information, a disruption to regular operations, financial losses to restore systems & files, and/or potential harm to an organization’s reputation.”

How real is the threat? Very Real.

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center

Paid $17,000

"The quickest and most efficient way to restore our systems and administrative functions was to pay the ransom"

Horris County, South Carolina School System

Paid $8,500

The school system had no choice but to pay the ransom after the FBI was unable to suggest and alternative.

Methodist Hospital in Henderson, KY

Paid $1,600

Announced an “internal state of emergency,” after numerous computer files held hostage by ransomware.

Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, KS

Extortion Continued

Paid hacker's requested amount, but the criminal only gave a "partial" release and then demanded more money.

Swansea, MA Police Department

Paid $750

Police department stated it was easier to pay the $750 ransom than try to figure out how to recover the files on their own.

Apple Device and Computer Users

6,500 Infected in 1.5 Days

Victms' computers flashed a message instructing them to send one bitcoin, valued at about $410, via a digital address.

"If you are infected, the chances are high that the data will be lost forever." - A joint press release by multiple organizations involved in fighting ransmonware.

Who Is Being Targetted? Are You At Risk?

Know Your Risks

High targets for ransomware include institutionl oranizations such as hospitals and other medical facilities, school discricts, colleges and universities, government agencies and even law enforcement, including local police departments.

However, individuals are also highly targetted. These can include doctors, dentists, lawyers and other professionals with access to sensetive information, as well as ordinary private citizens who are locked out of their computers and cell phones by ransomware until they pay a ransom of a few hundred dollars.

modern computer gadgets

The More Smart Devices You Or Your Company Has, The More You Are At Risk!

Individuals and companies are increasingly entrusting vital personal content and private workplace data to computers and smartphones and tablets, but are at the same time not very likely to keep secure backups or protect them from hackers.

It is estimated that as few as 25% of home computer users back up their data regularly. For companies with large amounts of employees, the more employees you have the more at risk your organization is..

What Can You Do On Your Own To Stop Ransomware? Not Much...

Regularly backup your computer onto a separate device that isn't online.
Never click on something if you don't know who sent it.
Even if you do know who sent it, if it looks like something they wouldn't normally send, don't click it.
Always have an up to date antivirus software on your computer

FBI Acknowledgement

The FBI acknowledges that in individual cases there's little it can or is willing to do.

You may already be targetted and not even know it!

All you have to do to get infected is go to a random website or open a malicious email. Ransomware can even be sent directly to your computer if the hackers has already placed a backdoor, and you won't even know it!
